TCDG One Act Play Institute
“Understanding Acting and the Theater in the One Act Play”

We guarantee to help your students in the process of:
  • discovering what makes a winning one act play
  • understanding the tools for literary analysis
  • exploring word color and imagery
  • analyzing elements of the text
  • learning the art of ensemble acting
  • determining focus and visual space
  • preparing the performance for blocking
  • experimenting with rehearsal techniques
  • practicing to perfect the one act play
  • selecting performance styles for each actor
  • facing the fear of performing on stage
  • expanding meaning through acting in the theater

The University Interscholastic League’s One-Act Play Contest, founded in 1927, is the largest high school play production contest or play festival in the world. More than 14,000 Texas high school students in more than 1,000 plays participate in 300 plus contests, which take place from the beginning of March through the three-day, 40-production State Meet One-Act Play Contest.

TCG offers an intensive and fun summer experience to learn the skills of acting that will allow students to become UIL State Champions! To become a State Champion out of the 14,000 students who compete in one act play competition requires much more than just practicing your acting skills during school time. To become a State Champion requires year around work and TCG offers you exactly that summer camp experience.

Students may choose to attend TCG One Act Play Workshop as an individual student or you may want to attend as an ensemble with your fellow actors from your school. (A $50 price reduction for each student applies if five or more students attend from one school). Each student will attend classes to learn basic and advanced acting skills. Throughout the week the group will put together a one act play and perform that play for fellow students, parents, and college student observers on the last afternoon. Students will be able to experience the “read through”, character analysis, blocking, “dress rehearsal”, and experience extensive one on one coaching. Every component of advanced acting will be examined. We can guarantee that every student attending the TCG One Act Play Workshop will see how a State Champion Play is chosen, created, and performed. And, we can guarantee this will all be accomplished in a fun and supportive environment aimed to build acting skills and appreciation of the theatre. Students choosing the one act play institute may not choose a “minor” field of study. We believe all six days must be devoted to the one act play institute.
